About a Brave Boy<\/span><\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”25″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n

It was a long time ago.<\/p>\n

Once upon a time, a poor young man was walking through mountains, forests and rivers looking for work. He walked and walked until he came to a large forest. Suddenly, he heard a man calling for help. He ran over straight away and saw a wolf attacking an old man. The boy grabbed a chunk of wood, lit it on fire, and managed to chase the animal away. The old man said:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Brave young man, thank you a thousand times for saving my life! I have nothing to reward you with, because I have nothing. But I promise you that whenever you are in need and think of me, I will help you.<\/p>\n

They said goodbye and went their separate ways. The boy walked on until he came to a large city. And here… it was black with mourning flags! What could it be? He entered an inn and asked the people for an explanation. They said:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Sixteen years ago, the princess gave birth to a daughter, but she was terrible. She was so strong, she had teeth on top and started talking right away! She was a strzyga…<\/p>\n

The king bought a coffin and buried the living strzyga. And she demands that a man be brought to her every day to be devoured. If her father does not give her anyone, she will come out at night and tear everyone apart! And so, every day for sixteen years, another man was doomed. First, it was prisoners serving life sentences, then more and more new people. There are no more inhabitants left, and now it seems that the king\u2019s turn has come! Despair, horror, meanness and fear reigned in the city, and the king announced that whoever replaced him for even one day their family would receive an inn and a palace as a reward.<\/p>\n

The storytellers fell silent, and the boy said:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Please take me to the king.<\/p>\n

When they arrived, the boy said:<\/p>\n

\u2014 I will go in your place today, king!<\/p>\n

To which the king replied:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Boy, know that you will die like thousands of others. At least tell me where your family is, and I will reward them handsomely for your life.<\/p>\n

\u2014 I am alone and I want to receive the reward myself.<\/p>\n

The king looked at the boy with satisfaction and ordered him to be taken to the church where the strzyga\u2019s tomb was located. News of the daredevil spread quickly and people accompanied the young man to the place, whispering:<\/p>\n

\u2014 What a brave young man!<\/p>\n

\u2014 Poor thing…<\/p>\n

\u2014 He wants to defeat the strzyga…<\/p>\n

The boy was let into the church and the doors were closed behind him. The boy was left alone. Sitting there in the pew, he remembered the old man and his advice. Immediately, he heard a strange voice inside him saying:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Hide behind the altar, boy, where the human bones lie that the strzyga leaves behind after devouring a human. Crawl underneath it, right to the bottom, and stay there until the very end. Remember, whatever happens, do not come out!<\/p>\n

And so it happened. When the strzyga flew out at midnight, the boy was hidden under the bones. She roared so loudly that the church shook, running around and searching for him, shouting:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Come out, man, I can smell fresh meat! If you don\u2019t come out, I\u2019ll torture you for a long time after I catch you, and I won\u2019t eat you right away!<\/p>\n

She screamed, sniffed and searched, but she couldn\u2019t find him because the human remains masked the smell… And the young man sat trembling in his hiding place. Meanwhile, the strzyga flew behind the altar and, howling with hunger, began to gnaw and suck on the bones lying there. She was already close to the tiny pile of bones, she had almost caught the hidden daredevil, when the cock crowed and the strzyga had to return to her coffin hungry.<\/p>\n

In the morning, people waited outside the church, unsure of the boy\u2019s fate. When it turned out that the brave boy had survived, they were amazed and carried him on their hands to the palace with joy. The king even held a feast for the whole town in his honour!<\/p>\n

But that was not the end of it: the brave young man still had two nights ahead of him in the vicinity of the strzyga.<\/p>\n

The next day, the daredevil was taken to the church by carriage. The people accompanying him were cheerful and full of hope for the future.<\/p>\n

Just as before, the boy mentioned the old man he had saved. And then something whispered to him:<\/p>\n

And so he did: at eleven o\u2019clock he climbed the stairs to the choir loft, scratched the door with blessed chalk and hid near the organ. When midnight struck, the tomb opened and the strzyga flew out. She was enraged and terribly hungry. She immediately knocked over the pews in the church and began to look around for her victim. Suddenly, she spotted the boy, clapped her hands with joy, roared, and rushed up the stairs to the choir loft!<\/p>\n

But suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks, because something pushed her away from the door and burned her. Howling horribly, she ran downstairs and began throwing corpses out of their coffins. Then she carried the coffins to the choir loft and began stacking them one on top of the other, one on top of the other… It looked like she was about to bring the last one, climb on top of the pile and get the boy, when he ripped the pipe out of the organ and knocked the whole pyramid of coffins onto the floor. And whatever the strzyga stacked, he knocked down again. Time passed, and finally the strzyga had to return to her tomb, hungry once again.<\/p>\n

Just like the day before, curious people waited outside the church, and then took him to the palace, from where he was to go to the strzyga\u2019s shelter for the last time that evening. Everyone waited anxiously, for it was the evening of reckoning. Either the young man would die, or he would save the people from death. When the boy was left alone in the locked church, he sat down on a pew and thought about the old man. Immediately, he heard a voice advising him:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Take the blessed chalk and hide behind the tomb door. When the strzyga rushes to the centre of the church, outline her coffin with chalk, jump inside and close the lid. Be deaf to her pleas and cries, listen to nothing and persevere to the very end!<\/p>\n

Midnight struck.<\/p>\n

The strzyga flew out of the tomb, howling wildly. She smashed pews, broke lampshades, and knocked down paintings. She dug up the entire floor out of hunger and roared… The boy took advantage of her inattention and hid in the coffin, having outlined it with chalk according to the old man\u2019s advice. And the strzyga flew around, hungry, destroying everything. When her hour came, she rushed into the family tomb. Seeing that all the coffins were occupied, she began to count them in search of her own:<\/p>\n

\u2014 One, two, three… Oh dear! What am I going to do now??? My coffin has been taken!<\/p>\n

She began to cry pitifully, lamenting in a human voice, unlike her previous one:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Dear man! I beg you, please come out! My father is the king, he will give you everything you desire, even the crown. Just come out!<\/p>\n

She began to run around the coffin, and the boy sat quietly, although he felt sorry for her. Suddenly, something fell to the ground, and then everything went quiet. The young man lifted the lid of the coffin and saw a beautiful sixteen-year-old girl lying on the floor. He picked her up because she had fainted, and she was so pretty that she glowed. And so they both fell asleep in the tomb from exhaustion. They were awakened by the voices of people who entered the church and then looked into the tomb. When they saw the beautiful couple, they immediately told the king. He rewarded the poor boy with a crown and his daughter\u2019s hand. A great wedding was held, and banners waved joyfully. For the wanderer had saved not only the inhabitants of the city, but also the young princess.<\/p>\n
